Slings

Snuggle Wrap Infant and baby Carrier : snuggly, stretchy fabric, ergonomically supports your and your babies body (Nice colors!)

The upright slings like Baby Bjorn are not recommended by some because it is believed they put added stress on the hips and spine while the bones are still soft. Many people love the padded slings because the baby can lie flat at first, lie propped up later and eventually sit upright and facing upright like a baby kangaroo

The Maya Wraps are beautiful and run $37, but are not padded.

Over the Shoulder Baby Holder look great and $35-$46 depending on fabric. Well padded too.

Recommended slings: Moby and Ergo.

Babies need to not be lying against hard surfaces for prolonged periods like car seats as well for back of baby’s cranium development.

Car Seats

Flat car seat for the first 2-3 months to help baby’s soft spine develop with no added upright stress. CAR SEAT: REAR FACING with sun protection

Strollers

Best jogging stroller: The expert buyers guide

1-2 strollers. Features to consider: a sturdy one you can jog with(do not necessarily have to be a jogger) with plenty of room below for storage and that the baby can recline in, with hood that covers baby well. 2nd one might be lightweight and one you can carry on the go.

Slings:

Babywearing

There are a variety of carriers to fit every lifestyle and budget. Finding the one (or two) that works for you is key. Here is a breakdown of carrier types. All can be purchased online. There are a few local specialty baby boutiques that carry a variety in the Bay Area such as Tot Tank (Alameda), Tiny Tots (Campbell), and Monkey Bars (Alameda).

With all carriers safety and positioning is key. Keep in mind the Babywearing ABCs and check out the optimal positioning for each carrier type by visiting the link below:

Safety

Stretchy Wraps: Stretchy wraps such as Moby, Boba and Solly are long pieces of fabric that have both diagonal and horizontal stretch. They come in one size. They are comfortable and fit like your favorite t-shirt. You must learn how to tie them and tie them tightly. Once you put on a stretchy wrap you can wear it and take baby in and out as needed. They can be used on the front facing in/out and on the hip only. There is also the Ktan which is a stretchy wrap without all the tying. Most find stretchy carriers comfortable to about 15lbs. You can find these used for as little as $10. Retail new is around $50.

Babywearing Shirts: Babywearing shirts like Nuroo, Nesting Days and others are also stretchy and designed to facilitate skin-to-skin. They are used for a short period of time and can only be used front facing in.

Woven Wraps: Woven wraps are long pieces of fabric that only have some diagonal stretch to them. They come in a variety of sizes, fabric blends, designs and prices. Typically start at around $100. You must learn how to tie them. They are can be used for a variety of carrying positions (Front facing in/out, Hip, and Back) and provide enough support to carry a toddler when needed.

Ring Slings: Ring slings are a piece of fabric with rings. They also come in a variety of fabric blends, shoulder types and patterns. Price range starts around $50. They work well for newborns and toddlers. They carry the weight all on one shoulder so this may not be the best choice for people with shoulder/neck/back issues but can be easily shared between caregivers.

Buckle Carriers: There is a huge variety in buckle carriers. Many buckle carriers (ex: Ergo, Tula and Lenny Lamb) will need an infant insert to accommodate a newborn. Other brands like Beco Gemini, Boba or Pikolo do not need an insert. The fit and comfort is very individual. They can accommodate front facing in, front facing out (depends on brand), back and hip. These can be shared between caregivers but all the straps will have to be adjusted between uses. It’s best to try some on with your baby before purchasing.

Mei Tais: Mei Tais are a square piece of fabric with four straps. They are fast and easy to use. You secure them in place by tying the straps into knots. They can also accommodate all the carrying positions and support newborn through toddlerhood. The Infantino Mei Tai is available to at Target. Other brands to consider: Catbird Baby, Babyhawk, Fidella FlyTai, Didy MySol, Babylonia BBTai.

Pouches: Pouches are like pageant sashes. Sizing is very important. In order for these to be used safely, you must have the correct size. There aren’t many brands available these days. 7 Slings aren’t worth the shipping price and the sizing is inaccurate.
