Home-birth Midwifery Services will include your prenatal care, your labor and birth, and another licensed midwife for your birth assistant. I work with a few wonderful community midwives. our assisting midwife will be carefully selected for you and your family.

Prenatal visits are once a month until the 28th week, every 2 weeks until the 36th week, and every week until birth.

Postpartum care includes a 1st day visit at about 24 hours, a visit on either day 3 to 4, then on day 7-10 and two more visits on week 3 and week 6 (also, one Ortho-Bionomy treatment for mother when she feels ready at my home studio). All post partum visits include well mama and well baby checks. All visits are 1 -2 hours.( 4-6 post-partum visits within your first six weeks of post birth).

Throughout all of pregnancy and postpartum, we are available for our clients 24/7 by phone for urgent concerns, and available by phone or email during business hours for everyday concerns.

Although optional, I recommend considering the services of a doula at your home birth.

What your care looks like:

Prenatal Care
All of your  prenatal care visits will most often be at your home with you and your family and sometimes at my office either in Berkeley or Vallejo home.
what else: involvement and integration of partner, relationship centered, family centered, supportive, educational, holistic, empowering, intimate and fun!

Nutrition, supplements, herbs, homeopathy, exercise, are very important to me. Also we work together through ortho-bionomy and structural awareness of you and baby together. (please read about ortho-bionomy under ortho-bionomy tab) We talk about breathe and core awareness for labor and birth.

Prenatal time: I will monitor Mother and baby’s vital signs, position and growth of baby. Nutritional and supplemental counseling and exercise, breast-feeding education, Childbirth preparation. Parenting, relationship and family support. One Ortho-Bionomy treatments included.

Labor and Birth time: You will have myself as your primary midwife, along with one more  licensed midwife. Calm, attentive labor, birth and post birth monitoring will be provided. Birthing tubs are welcomed for labor and  birth and available to rent from our community. I often integrate ortho-bionomy into labor to help ease tension and pain and aid alignment for mother and baby.

We support your first few hours after birth, towards having a quiet bonding time with your baby and your partner.  We believe in skin-to-skin, baby’s first breast crawl and when needed,  breastfeeding guidance to towards a good breastfeeding experience. We will stay for several hours after your birth. We do not leave until you are stable, breast-feeding, showered and have had a good, warm meal. We will do a complete baby exam a few hours after your birth.

Postpartum visits

Your post partum visits will be up to 2 hours each. We will visit you at your home within the first 24 hours after your birth, we will return on day 3 or 4 and 7 to 10 days. The next visit will be at my home studio on the 3rd week and the 6th. You will have a 1 hour and 20 minutes, Ortho-Bionomy treatment, some time between your 2nd and 4th week at my home studio, when you feel you are ready. Ortho-bionomy Cranio-sacral adjustments for baby will be included in any of these visits. One Moxa treatment will also be included if we feel it is beneficial. Additional postpartum services are offered on an individual basis. Please feel free to ask me more about additional postpartum services.

 Leopi_Nicola_Painting-7ALTERNATIVES TO HOME BIRTH

Hybrid Care

Leopi as your labor guide for your hospital birth

We are also called a Monitrice; a midwife who guides and supports the mother and her  partner through labor and birth.

What is a Monitrice? She is quite different from a Doula. The word “monitrice” is french and means, one who monitors, instructs, coaches. A monitrice provides, physical, nurturing, emotional, and, informational support to the expectant family during labor, birth and post birth, just like a Doula but she also uses her skills as a midwife for assessing the progression of labor, so that we can do most of the good work in the comfort of your own home. If you would like to go the hospital early, you may not need the benefits of a monitrice.

Monitrice services are particularly useful for families having a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) those wanting an unmedicated birth, first time mothers, and those with previous negative birth experiences/s. If you hope to be able to stay at home as long as possible, before going to hospital or birth center, monitrice support can be invaluable.

A monitrice is often a midwife or a nurse hired to help the family labor at home as long as possible before transferring to the chosen care provider and birthplace (usually the hospital). The main difference between a midwife and a monitrice is that the monitrice is not in a position of primary responsibility for the birth (monitrices don’t catch babies except in the case of a precipitous birth).

Monitrices provide emotional, educational, and physical support during your pregnancy and birth and also post birth time, to help you have the simplest and most natural  birth but also to help you in the miraculous transition into parenthood.

Here’s a little look at what monitrice services are.

  • 2 Midwifery based birth prep and guidance in your home or my home office studio, about 2-3 hours each.Ortho-bionomy: physical, structural, core awareness of you and your  baby together as a co-experience of birth. We will always work towards optimal baby positioning.
  • These are 2.5-3 hour intensive which should be done close to your due date. The ortho-Bionomy session is very unique because I will be combine the practical wisdom of midwifery with somatic and structural body intelligence. This combination is a very potent perspective and can bring a simple and powerful approach to your birth journey for you and your partner. We begin with guidance for labor and birth through a midwife’s perspective, and continue the session with a full body Ortho-bionomy treatment. This will help you to  experience being in a state of softness and relaxation for your birth process and also to remind you that you are a perfect vessel for you and your baby’s journey.Through your body, we will track together how to resource your deepest state of relaxation for natural child birth. Tune in and tune up and re-align for labor preparation and ease, for your birth journey!
  • On-call for you 24 hours/day from 36 weeks until you have your baby
  • Attendance to  your labor and birth journey as soon as you need a monitrice present.
  • Labor monitoring including maternal vitals, periodic fetal heart tone checks, and cervical dilation checks, if we feel it would be necessary.
  • I will reman with you for 1-2 hours after the birth and help with initial skin to skin or breast crawl and latch.
  • 2 postpartum appointments within the first few weeks, after you return home, to help with postpartum adjustment and breastfeeding and ortho-Bionomy and or/moxa and cranial sacral for baby. We can also discuss extended post birth care individually as the need arises. (there is an extra fee for extended visits)

During our prebirth visits, I get to know you, your body, your partner and family, and your desires and even your fears for this pregnancy and birth. Your partner is also very important to me and I have much to share to BOTH parents. You will also receive a 1-2 ortho-bionomy sessions if your visits are at my home office.

We will labor at home together until it is time for you to go to the hospital.  Both you and baby are monitored  carefully, baby for heart tones, you for blood pressure, temperature, cervical dilation checks, if you choose. I will also monitor intake of food and water. You are able to eat all of your own delicious food and drink and ease into dilation in the warm and peaceful atmosphere of your home. Once we arrive at the hospital, we join  your birth team that you have created for your self and your family.

I will remain with you as your labor companion to you and your partner, until baby is born and in your arms. I will stay 1-2 hours after your birth to help with skin to skin, bonding, and also breast feeding support if possible.

3000.00-3900.

Midwifery Care may be partially covered by most PPO plans

Midwifery Concurrent Care

prenatal and post-partum care only -( labor/ birth support not included)

I offer a midwifery model of care as your concurrent care person.

Imagine having the best of both worlds when you are uncertain or unable to have a  home birth, but, you want the midwifery model of care? Many families choose to have the benefits of the hospital setting available for their birth, but also want the holistic benefits of the midwifery model of care, for their health and their baby’s health during pregnancy, birth and post-birth.

Midwifery Prenatal and post-birth care would be integrated into your OB/GYN, family practice or nurse midwife care, which would be your primary care person. However,

I am not available as an “on call midwife” because you have a primary care doctor. Your primary care person is the first person you would contact in case of any immediate attention.

This means my care would be alongside your primary care person. Our visits would be in the comfortable environment of your home. Your prenatal and post partum visits are very important and can prevent complications and most of all, prepare you for a calmer and smoother birth and a good family transition. We also have very interesting conversations and a lot of fun.

Concurrent care is for families who choose to be in a hospital setting for their birth and, under the care of a doctor/nurse-midwife, and who may also have chosen a birth Doula for their birth in the hospital.

What is the midwifery model of care?

The Midwifery Model of Care is a holistic perspective. We support the physical, emotional and Spiritual well being of a woman and her family. It is about supporting the mother and her partner. Preparing for a simple and natural birth as much as possible, but also preparing for when the birth journey needs to become more complex. We also want to prepare our parents for life after birth as individuals, parents, lovers and partners. Intimacy and sexuality are important and can feel difficult to talk about for couples. We as midwives, are excellent taboo breakers and open conversation towards a deeper understanding of this amazing time in your life.

Siblings are  often included at some of our visits, so that we can also  help them integrate with their new life and new family member.

Holistic care is prevention; nourishing and medicinal foods, homeopathy! food based supplements, and optimal fetal positioning for the simplest and safest way to birth your baby. Exercise that is appropriate for pregnancy and core release. Emotional and spiritual support. Mindfulness and breath for every day and then of course, for your birth. Informed consent about what is ahead and, the many decisions that are in front of you.

The power of knowledge helps a mother and her family, stay in alignment towards a healthy pregnancy, birth and post birth time. Your health and state of mind for optimal health are important to me. Pregnancy, birth and the first year after birth, are one of the most transformational, yet vulnerable times for a woman and her family.

“How we see her and her health and that of her baby is extremely important as to how she will see her Self and all that she and her partner are capable of. ”

Concurrent Midwifery Care includes:

1) One initial complementary consultation

2) Prenatal Care visits  in  your home  or  my home/studio (approximately 8 to 10 visits, and about 2 hours each with your partner of course)

Comprehensive care of mother and baby, counseling and relationship changes, sex, communication and changes, education and support in nutrition and nourishment, food supplementation with herbs and supplements, exercise, movement and breath, birth preparation and informed consent, Ortho-bionomy: physical, structural, core awareness of you and your  baby together as a co-experience of birth. We will always work towards optimal baby positioning.

During our prenatal visits, I will monitor Mother and baby’s vital signs, optimal positioning of baby and monitor growth of baby.  Breast-feeding education, natural pain relief childbirth preparation and post-partum support preparation and also review your hospital birth plans.

3) Post-Birth Care (6 visits, 5 of which are at your home): Post-partum would include one visit about 24 hours after your birth at home or hospital, another visit about day 3 (newborn screening if needed)and day 10 at your home, and two more visits in the week 3 and 6 windows at my home/studio or your home.

6 week Post-Birth care program for you and your new family with a Midwife

In many other countries and cultures it is well known that women who have just given birth are in a sensitively wide open, sacred and delicate transition and deserve proper time to deeply rest, hibernate and be well taken care of. We midwives, like to call it the 4th trimester. Mother and baby are still connected as one entity but learning to be in two new bodies. As mama’s body is physically healing, she is also processing her birth, her hormones, the loss of sleep and just only beginning the new experience of lactation. She is learning to breast feed and so is her newborn. It is most often not easy and nipples and emotions can be very, very sore at times. With all of this, there are many new and complex emotions. Most importantly, she is learning about a little new person, who is small in size but immense in mystery and needs. All of this is happening while her relationship with her partner transforms and expands to love another being. She and her partner are learning to become parents. It is important for mama, papa, and baby to have the support they need during this precious time. How can we help the extended  family really help the family?  It is baby Moon time!

What to Expect in a Session

If you have just had a baby, you will most likely need to bring your baby with you.  Please be sure that a family member or close friend will accompany you and be there to hold your baby as you receive your session and we can take short breastfeeding breaks, whenever needed.

Generally, as we start to heal and track your pain, it is a good idea to be prepared to come for your treatments weekly or bi-weekly as we begin to unfold the layers of your physical and emotional body. One Ortho-bionomy session is about an hour long but can go to an hour and twenty minutes because of settling in and settling after.

Please drink plenty of water the day of your session, to help fluids move in your tissues during and after your session.

You will be on a massage table fully dressed. Clean and warm socks are required. There are no two sessions alike. What you may experience in a session is your body settling into a deep state of relaxation and a quality of stillness. You may notice an internal experience of being fully present, calm and a sense of integration with parts of yourself. You will often be in a light dream state, sometimes you may notice an image, or emotion or specific time and place can come up and pass again. You may remain alert, smile, giggle, laugh or fall asleep, tremble, feel ticklish, a sad tender feeling, a tear, a light flash, a deep sigh, yawn, have funny little body jerks, have a noisy belly, and maybe snore.

Sometimes you may not feel anything at all, although I may feel your body releasing.

There will be a pause and rest and sometimes I may rock you gently in between each release position, for your body to respond, assimilate and settle throughout your session. I will often let you know what I am tracking, so that you can learn to sense the vocabulary of ortho-bionomy. I will be gentle with your body’s nervous system because sometimes the subtler the release the bigger the feel and response.

I will rely on your verbal feedback to find the techniques which best facilitate your body’s return to natural alignment and what is most comfortable for you. There should be no discomfort. You will let me know if there is.

Comfortable loose cotton clothing is suggested. Please no shorts, tight pants, or tight bras please. Long sleeves preferred, to allow for a full range of movement and exploration and a feeling of warmth. Socks are good. As the nervous system settles into a healing state your body may cool down. I will most likely cover you with a blanket and use different sizes pillows for your comfort. There is no oil involved.

Ortho-bionomy and Post birth support- hourly

Here is a place for you to process your birth story through your body and your words, and have the support that is unique to you and your baby.

Our post birth visits are especially profound and helpful if you have felt any type of trauma during your birth experience. It is also equally important for partners to have a safe space to process their feelings. These visits are often wonderfully rich and powerful.
I include all that is posted above for post birth services.

*ORTHO-BIONOMY BASED CRANIO-SACRAL FOR BABIES

DSCF3082Ortho-bionomy is gentle and deeply healing for a newborn baby. The Cranio-sacral techniques of Ortho-bionomy, are similar to traditional cranio-sacral but also unique to Ortho-bionomy.  Ortho-bionomy cranial sacral work is an integration of the same whole body Ortho-bionomy techniques (rooted in Osteopathy) and traditional Cranio-sacral techniques.

OB helps the new born baby, sentient and open in body, spirit and emotion, to process her birth story at her own pace. She can re-center, align and integrate her birth experience and be more calmly embodied for her life ahead, and enjoy her new body! Ortho-bionomy is extremely gentle, respectful and nourishing for babies.

I often advise my new mothers that both mother and baby will need an Ortho-bionomy treatment because of the synergetic relationship they have together. Mother and Baby are actually like one being for a while, which continues even beyond the fourth trimester. Both may need to be balanced and realigned after birth. Even when the birth “seems” simple and un-traumatic one of the two passengers could have had a bumpier ride and this will effect the other. Calming one nervous system will calm the other. Ortho-bionomy can provide this for baby. Both Moxa and / or Ortho-bionomy can be offered to the mother, both deeply soothing and nurturing. Both can come as often as weekly or just come for one session and still there will be great benefit.

What to Expect in a Ortho-Bionomy Session

Generally, as we start to heal and track your pain, it is a good idea to be prepared to come for your treatments weekly or bi-weekly as we begin to unfold the layers of your physical and emotional body. One Ortho-bionomy session is about an hour long but can go to an hour and twenty minutes because of settling in and settling after.

Please drink plenty of water the day of your session, to help fluids move in your tissues, during your session. You will be on a massage table fully dressed. Clean and warm socks are required. There are no two sessions alike.

What you may experience in a session is your body settling into a deep state of relaxation and a quality of stillness. You may notice an internal experience of being fully present, warm, calm and a sense of integration with parts of yourself. Sometimes you may notice an image, or emotion, or specific time and place can come up and pass again. You may remain alert, smile, laugh or fall asleep and snore. No worries please about snoring. It’s an honor!

Sometimes you may not feel any of the subtle shifts at all, but simply feel better afterwards. (although I will feel your body releasing during session.) There will be a pause and rest and sometimes rocking, in between each release position, for your body to respond, assimilate and settle throughout your session.

I will most likely cover you with a blanket and use different sizes pillows for your comfort . There is no oil involved.

“Mother Roasting” Treatments for Post-Birth

“Mother Roasting,” is a wonderful way to deeply warm the new mother after she has given birth. Moxa uses a herb called Chinese Mugwort and comes in the form of a rolled stick, which looks a bit like a  charcoal cigar. The end of this “stick” is lit and forms a hot bright ember. I use a smokeless type of Chinese Moxa stick. This treatment can take up to one hour.

The experience is  deeply warming, nourishing, and nurturing, as we warm the uterus from the front and  back. It is a form of ritual of gratitude; for mother and baby passing safely through the threshold and now closing the gates.

Moxa treatment can begin around day 3 – 5 post vaginal birth and a little longer after a C-section.

Historically, Mother Roasting is the practice of warming the new mother to aid in recovery from childbirth and restore energy and bring back her chi energy. This takes different forms in various cultures. In Malaysia, a massage with a special stone that is heated on the fire, wrapped in a cloth and placed on the abdomen. In Thailand, the fire was at the mother’s bedside, where she would lie day and night rotating her body every half an hour. In the Hopi Indian culture in Arizona, the mother was rested on top of a heated bed of sand and a sheepskin, and then covered well.
